FOP in Egypt

[edit]

Hello, I'm a long-time Commons user from Egypt and have been an activist for Creative Commons and open licensing for over 15 years. I have a good understanding of Commons's policies and rules.

I think your perspective on licensing in Egypt is completely wrong. You and (JWilz12345) based your opinion on a translated version of just one law! What about the other laws? We have many laws in Egypt regarding copyright, the depiction of buildings and sculptures, and other. The wording of our laws in Egypt is a bit complex. We are a tourist destination and welcome photography, unlike some other countries We don't have laws that prohibit photography generally. The concept of "freedom of panorama" maybe unclear in the Middle East, and many legislative people don't understand it to make it clear. I assure you they don't prohibit the FOP in the literal sense.

We discussed the issue of FOP in Egypt in 2013 here in commons (with one of admins) and saw no problem with it. The recent discussion on Commons was sudden and rushed, with limited participation. We requested time to allow more specialists and users to contribute before resolving the issue. Currently, we in "Wikimedia User Group in Egypt" are in contact with legal and legislative experts to investigate this matter.

The fate of thousands of images cannot be decided in such a hasty manner based solely on the interpretation of one person. All I requested in the discussion was to postpone a decision until further investigation is conducted. I urge you to refrain from nominating images for deletion until the matter can be discussed again. thank you. Ibrahim.ID 14:53, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, for several years you have frequently nominated pictures I've uploaded, usually from long flickr photosets and often ones which have been on Commons for years, for deletion. I have consistently argued that most if not all of these could either be judged not to constitute copyright violations because of de minimis, or, if not, cropped to remove the offending parts. In the future, I would kindly ask you to either 1) at least take the time to crop the images to remove the violating portions of the image, or ping me so I can do it myself, and I would urge you just to do that in the future if you think you see a copyright violation. Saves you, me, and an admin a whole lot of time. Thanks. Kingofthedead (talk) 07:34, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

In addition, looking through your talk page and contribution history you seem to be an extremely prolific nominator of files for deletion, maybe the most on Commons. Many people have brought up similar concerns as myself in terms of your perceived overreach in nominating files which exist in a very grey area. I'd urge you to reconsider your role in being such a prolific advocate for file deletion and what this encompasses in terms of building up the project of Commons as a database of many free-use files and the dangers of going too far.
