Вікі любить пам'ятки 2025 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 in Ukraine

[edit]

(text in English at the bottom)

Hello, I wanted to ask for your opinion. Do you think I should apply for adminship on Commons? Since you’re already an experienced administrator, your opinion is important to me. I have a good understanding of licensing rules (especially in Central Asian countries), and from time to time I participate in DR. After becoming an administrator I also plan to work on CSD and RfR. I am already an administrator on the kywiki, but there I mostly handle technical tasks and sometimes act as a mediator.

The main reason I’m considering requesting admin rights is that there are no administrators from my region — that is, from Central Asia. I could easily handle requests in languages such as Russian, Kyrgyz, and other related languages (see Robert Lindsay, p. 9). I will also ask other administrators for their opinions and summarize their feedback before deciding whether I should apply for adminship or not. Incall talk 16:49, 19 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Question

[edit]

Hi Auntof6, could you please assist me and undelete a category-page for me? This page was not empty, it had a history and should have been kept as a redirect. So it must have been an error. It wouid mean a lot to me. ² Hope this can be resolved soon. Thanks Peli (talk) 16:50, 19 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Pelikana: Done. I made it a redirect.
@Oursana: For future cases like this, please have the category moved instead of creating a new one. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:58, 19 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: again she tries to trash the history of a folder, which was in good standing, by creating her own new folder with just slightly altereed title and moving all of the content to her new folder disrespecting the work done by others just to pretend to have done all of it herself, all from scratch since yesterday. I hope somebody will educate her that this is not the right way to do it, to mistreat the work of others like that. Because it is a form of thievery. Especially when elaborated introduction lines are copied unaltered without properly sourcing them. Like we have seen happening more than once...
Also I wish they would stop tinkering with original descriptions and breaking them. These interuptions are felt as violent invasions, this style of 'hijacking and raping' folders and descriptions is permanent source of frustration and conflict. Because these actions are sabotage of many hours of work done during five and more years. These whimsically edited descriptions and layout now 'escape' from searches like this. and this. I fear that descriptions in table columss are much harder to translate machinally by a bot. I can live with template artwork used with the full dutch original dataset provided by Mr. Nostalgic in the description field. I mean I have seen it been done right by editors who do respect the complete dutch lay out of >300k files. In which way could we achieve improvement? Good faith alone does not guaranty for quality. Peli (talk) 12:48, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Pelikana: I have left Oursana a message asking them, again, to move categories instead of creating new ones. For future issues, please report at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:34, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I do not know any rule for moving instead creating new ones. I do this for years without any comment as do others. Please restrain from atacking me.Oursana (talk) 22:48, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Oursana: The reason is that the history is lost when doing it the way you did. The process is considered a rename. Please see the policy Commons:Rename a category#Rename process for explanation of the two ways to do a category rename.
You may have been doing this for a long time, but now you know the right way to do it. If you see anyone else doing this, feel free to let them know the right way. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:04, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Animals by named individual owner

[edit]

Hi, why didn't you also remove this cat from Category:Pets of presidents of the United States? Either keep it in both or remove from both. —capmo (talk) 12:21, 1 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Because the subcategories of the US one do indicate individual people (although some of the categories could be named better). The ones in the category I removed aren't. -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:23, 1 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

官報

[edit]

How is Category:官報 not a meta category? Anything that would be in it could (and should) be sorted into one of the yearly categories. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 23:07, 1 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Nihonjoe: Hello, Nihonjoe. Thanks for your question.
A metacat's name needs to indicate what the grouping criterion (sometimes called sort criterion) is for the category. This one doesn't do that. If the name were "官報 by year", then it would be a metacategory. Without that, you could use {{CatCat}} instead.
The content here does look like a metacat, though, so I would recommend renaming the category by moving it to "官報 by year", or even "Official Gazette (Japan) by year" to match the parent category.
I hope this helps. If you would like to rename the category and would like help doing it, let me know. -- Auntof6 (talk) 23:14, 1 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Nature by date / location

[edit]

Please, stop reverting. This categorisation is a total mess, and your edits not doing it inch better. ~Fleur~ 13:32, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Fleur-de-farine: I am in the process of explaining it on your talk page. Your edits were incorrect, and I hope my explanation will help. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:34, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
With more complex double / triple intersections that template doesn’t work, so it’s better to remove it. ~Fleur~ 13:42, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Fleur-de-farine: Which template? -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:43, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
DMC. It’s fine, but only with one parameter (by city or by date etc), but when we need more precise categorisation (Art by date by country, Bridges by city by material by country etc) it doesn’t help. In these cases better to remove it, as for my opinion. ~Fleur~ 13:51, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Fleur-de-farine: Yes, I think there are many people who don't like that template for that very reason. It's true that it doesn't always add the categories you'd want. There's always the nocat parameter if you want to use that, but coding metacat directly is also fine. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:58, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please look at the Category:Nature by year by country : with all three parameters template still gives a notice (but it’s metacat). I also think that DMC shows too much of visual garbage, unfortunately. ~Fleur~ 14:05, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Fleur-de-farine: I assume you mean this version, before I changed it again. The "nature" parameter didn't belong there. When you have a category with a name like "X by Y by Z", the syntax for the MetaCat template is this:
{{MetaCat|z|y}}
Note that the y and z parameter appear in a different order in the metacat parameters than they do in the category name.
With the DMC template, the syntax is this:
{{DMC|x|y|z}}
Note that these parameters appear in the same order as in the category name, and the main topic ("nature", in this case) is specified. That "visual garbage" can be suppressed with a parameter, but you can also avoid it by just using the MetaCat template in the first place.
I know this can be complicated and confusing. I'm considered an expert in metacats, and even I have to stop and think sometimes to make sure I get it right. -- Auntof6 (talk) 14:15, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for such a detailed explanation. It was very helpful and I’ll try to use these given prompts. :) ~Fleur~ 19:21, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
